Glassbeadmaking mit Michal Silberberg

In the one day workshop we will focus on exploring new color pallets and new design ideas through the Multistringer technique.
During the workshop the students will make together a wide pallet of vibrant stringers using my special color recipes. We will apply the stringers into the bead and manipulate them in various ways to create beads in few styles. The students will learn the right way to keep each color sharp and distinguished in order to make harmonized, eye- pleasing surface. They will also learn how to use brass and graphite molds in order to maintain the colors and design in place.

Sculptural Lampbeadworking mit Elise Strauss

Sea Life Story Pole

In this class you will construct your own sea life diorama on a brass candlestick. The design will be your own – you get to decide how many harbor seals and/or beluga whales to make and how to top off your sculpture -- with a puffin? A seagull? A wave? The vertical composition is a fun challenge! You will learn the basics of sculptural lampwork and also make small murrini fish to apply to your Story Pole, all while exploring harmonious composition for a vertical element. All the pieces to your Storypole will be created in this class and we will discuss how to assemble it in detail when you get home, including a recipe for a patina that works wonderfully for the brass candlestick base.

ELISE STRAUSS aus OREGON (USA)

Elise Strauss has been making glass beads since 1995. At first a hobby, she began devoting more and more time to learning the craft, culminating in the decision in 2007 to quit her job and career at Providence Hospital to indulge her passion on a full time basis. Since then, she was awarded a Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Award in 2009, and has continued her quest to master the art of glass bead making by taking many classes and participating in other artistic endeavors that enrich her love of working with glass.

In May of 2012, Elise travelled to Murano, Italy, to study under Lucio Bubacco. The week-long class opened her eyes to a treasure trove of new techniques, and being exposed to Lucio’s skill and passion for sculptural flameworking proved to be one of the most important moments in her life. His way of capturing movement in glass is the one achievement she aspires to; her work has tried to reflect that since her return. In 2015 Elise and her husband and two dogs moved to Salem, Oregon, after living in Alaska for 45 years. She continues to teach lampwork, make beads, and compete in agility, Nosework, and Barn Hunt with her dogs.

Reverse Painting on glass mit Bronwen Heilmann

This is an intermediate class focusing on how to work with enamels and how to apply them.  We will be focusing on applying wet enamel, capturing your own line-drawings on a flat surface then, after firing the enamels; we will apply your image to a bead.

Day 1:  We will be creating our own one-of-a-kind small glass paintings.  We will learn how different brushes create different effects, and how to sign you name on your work.

Day 2:  We will be lighting the torch and rolling up our sleeves, as well as our paintings, to create beautiful pieces of wearable art.  There will be a lot of hands on practice in order become comfortable with the amount of heat we need, and the new tools we will be using to make the images permanent on our bead.

Glassbeadmaking with Enamels and Stringer mit Gay Massender

Day One
We will begin the day by pulling a variety of thicknesses of stringer and practice applying them on barrel shaped beads, learning whereabouts in the flame the bead needs to be and how much heat is needed within the bead in order to be able to achieve good results.
Next we will make a murrini cane using Effetre glass, Thompson enamel and stringer. I will share with you some of my favourite recipes.  We will look at different methods for application on a test bead. Before going on to make our finished beads
We will prepare encased stringer, in several colours, using the striped encase method, to be used in our Posy Vase beads.

Kimono - Love Bird Bead
We will make the Kimono love bird bead, inspired by Japanese prints and kimono fabrics.   For our bead we will use encasing techniques and enamel application that give added depth to the bead before applying surface decoration using fine stringer and raking to complete our beads.
Posy Vases

This bead employs similar techniques to the Kimono bead, but has a two toned base, again we will add enamel and decoration under the encasing before applying surface decoration using our prepared murrini (for our first bead in this style) and encased stringer (for our second bead in this style).

Day Two

We will start the day by pulling a variety of enamelled stringer that will be used throughout all of the day’s beads.  We will explore mixing enamel colour.

We will apply fine stringer to a barrel bead in order to practice the application methods we will employ later in the day, such as a tapered end

Moonlight Tree Bead

Our first bead of the day will be a Moonlight Tree Bead.  Using sunset tones of glass and enamel to build a base bead.  We will use encasing techniques to add depth before applying surface decoration of fine black stringer, enamelled stringers and enamel powder.

Out to Sea

This bead will see us employ and practice many of the skills used in the Moonlight Tree Bead.  We will apply fine stringer to create a tapered end in order to add grasses to the surface of our bead.

Across the River Scene Bead

This bead will build upon the skills explored in our earlier work.  In addition, we will begin to explore the possibilities for adding further depth to our work by using stringer to paint the base bead before encasing.  The foreground will be applied to the top of our bead in the form of fine stringer, enamelled stringer and enamel powder.
