This workshop begins with a 1 day intensive workshop on headpins, followed by one day making lightweight felted brooches and fun earrings from your headpins. This workshop will have you making beautiful, well-matched, intricate headpin elements perfect for earrings, focal pendants or brooches. You will start with simple headpin designs and end with more advanced styles. Students will learn heat control, how glass moves, and how to make two identically sized headpins sequentially, all while learning over a half dozen different designs.
Headpins – Day 1
Patty provides sandpaper to clean wires, sharpened SS mandrel for pulling points, all wire used, ruler, sharpie, rod nippers, leaf press to borrow if students don’t have one.
Students must bring wire holding tool (6” or longer pin vise, or Carlo Dona holding tool, or Arrow Springs Broach clip tool), razor blade, leaf and shell presses (if they have them), scissors, graphite paddle or BBQ mashers.
Day 2 – Brooches and Earrings from Headpins
On the second day of this workshop students will learn how to make various styles of simple earrings using headpins as the base element, and also a felted brooch (like the first one in the photos) using
Timesewn-in headpin elements along with other decorative beads. This brooch can be made in several shapes, and is completely finished on the front and back. Kits will be available containing the basic elements for the brooches (felt, interior stiffening, pin back, and adornments) that will coordinate with their headpins from the first day. The techniques used to fabricate the brooches include some sewing with thread and wire, and a little wire wrapping. Students will leave the workshop with at least one brooch and two pairs of earrings.
